Accommodation Operations > Management of Linen - Page 8

STORAGE OF LINEN:

Linen is the larger part of the housekeeping budget and its quality plays most important role in the standards of the housekeeping department. Linen is stored in the linen room of the hotel, while in the smaller hotels it can store in the floor pantries of the housekeeping. The pantry of the linen room wherever the linen is stored is secured by putting the locks so that the loss or theft of the linen can be controlled. The linen is kept on the racks in the linen room to save the lien from any kind of damage due to soiling or any kind of rodents.

Also the linen room is regularly sprayed with the pest control and rodent control chemicals so that the growth of any of the two can be controlled and linen can be secure. The lien is always store in the dry place to avoid any kind of mild or bacterial or fungal growth on it, which can damage the linen. The storage place needs to free of any protrusion so that the damage due to hooking or any other reason can be avoided. Apart from putting all these measures in the linen room, the same are also employed in the floor pantries and maids trolley.

The lien is always stored above the floor so that any kind of infestation due to any made can be checked and the lien can be stored neatly and cleanly. Also the linen stored is kept at a distance from the wall so as to avoid any kind of infestation from the walls and seepage to stain or damp the linen.

INSPECTION OF LINEN:

Linen of the housekeeping and the F&B department comes indirect contact with the guest and a through check becomes very necessary to ensure that quality is maintained. The inspection of the linen is done in the laundry, the linen room and the floor in the housekeeping department before it goes in contact with the guest.

The linen is inspected at all these levels to ensure that stained or damaged linen does not reach the guest. Whenever linen is sent from the floor for washing the washer before putting it to the wash checks the kind of stains and gives the necessary attention to ensure that the quality wash is done to the linen. After the wash at the time of ironing the linen is again inspected by the ironer and he / she ensures that the linen which is stained or damaged does not go to the next level but is given required attention. If the linen is stained it is rewashed with caution to get rid of the stain. But if the linen is damaged than the linen is kept separately out of the circulation so that it can be discarded at the time of yearly inventory. If the linen can be mended than it is sent to the tailor for the mending and than refinished before sending it to the linen room.

The linen is next inspected in the linen room for the quality of the finish which if is not satisfying than it is returned to the laundry for refinishing. Also the linen room checks the linen for the quantity to keep the inventory control on it. If there is any difference in the count from the sent records than immediate action is taken to correct it. The last level of inspection is done by the housekeeping attendant who before putting the linen into the guest room gives a final check and if finds any kind of damage or stain returns and exchange it with the fresh from the linen room. The linen room deal with this stained or damaged linen as discussed above.
