Accommodation Operations > Management of Linen - Page 11

CONDEMNING LINEN PROCEDURE:

Every piece of linen has a life and according to its life it can bear certain number of washes. After the fixed life, which is not very calculated, the line starts to wear off and loose its strength or color and at this point it becomes un-presentable in front of the guest thus it is removed from the circulation and condemned. The housekeeping department as and when they find damage to the linen or any kind of persistent or permanent stain in it time to time condemn the linen. This discarding of the linen is not permanent but it is merely the first step towards the discarding. The next step is the decision by the housekeeper who takes a call on discarding.

If She / He feels that the linen can be used in circulation after mending or giving special cleaning than the linen is put back in circulation after accomplishing the process. After the call of the housekeeper it is the final verdict of the Accounts left before the linen can be stamped as condemned or Discard. At the time of the yearly inventory the condemned linen are shown to the accounts person who decides on it and when finalized they are stamped as Discard or Condemned.

Although the final verdict is by the accounts person but in general it is a mere formality and the call of the housekeeper is the final call. It is important that the linen condemned is marked as Discard or Condemned in bold and number of times so that it does not return into circulation by any chance also to ensure that housekeeping does not use it to cover its inventory next time.

MARKING & MONOGRAMMING:

A hotel put a lot of linen to circulation at different times in its operation. It becomes difficult for the hotel to identify which linen was put in circulation on what date. Thus to help the hotel personnel with the date of circulation and identifying the age of the linen hotel marks them with the help of a marker or ink or otherwise puts a monogram indicating the month & year of putting in circulation. The above task is carried with the help of permanent ink marker with pointed tip for clarity and to avoid running of ink into the linen. Also the permanent ink is used so that the mark can be seen for long on the linen and it does not get washed away in the washes.

In case of the monogramming special labels are prepared by embroidery which are stitched in the hemming of the linen and serves as vital source in calculating the life of the linen. Nowadays special labels are available which under heat and pressure stick to the hem of the linen and dose not wear off with the washes. These also serve the purpose of calculating the life of the linen.

The major reason behind this task is to ensure that the new linen is given proper care in laundry and if any kind of graying or discoloring is observed than that requires a check of the washing machine and chemicals. Also if the linen is damaged by some guest, or the

staff which is new, as identified from the monogram or marking, than it is debited to the person as 300% to 250% of the price of linen. If the same linen is found to be old than the debit is 100 - 150% the price as per the policy of the company wherein the company can also leave the charges of damage.
