SELECTION OF LINEN

While selecting of linen a lot of factor are considered.

Budget - The most important of all is the budget, which indicates the available fund for the purchase. Depending upon the budget and the requirement a decision can be made from the available materials and samples. Budget plays most important role in deciding the material for the use.

Utility - The use of the materials is another important factor in decision making for the purchase or selection of the linen. The material for the bed sheet is soft, absorbent and preferably white in color in the hotel industry. It should bear a lot of strength in it. Thus the preferred material is white cotton. While for the table linen the material should be tough and bear a lot more strength in it and should be easy to maintain it clean due to the kind of process it goes through. But while considering the napron Terricot is preferred which offer attractive colors and easy maintenance and wash.

Required Quantity - Required quantity also play important role as it adversely affect the budget and thus it affect the decision making for the material purchase.

Finish - Depending upon the requirement the finish of the material also play critical role in selection of the fabric. For the bed sheet the material required should preferable soft in touch and bright in finish while at the same time the material for the bedcover and upholstery should be bright and colorful with heavy finish and may be some decorative finish with embroidery or golden thread in it. The material is observed under the lens for the closeness of the weave, which help in also determining the strength of the linen. The terminal or the side edges or the selvedge or the hemming is carefully observed to find out about the possibility for any kind of wear or tear from them in short life.

Shrinkage - The selection of the material also depend upon the quality of the fabric. Before finalizing the selection of the material for the purchase the fabric is tried at various level. The sample of the fabric is cut in two equal size pieces and the measurement for the both is taken and noted in diary or paper. One of the piece is sent to washing in the machine for at least 10 regular process including wash, rinse, drying and ironing. After the requested wash the material is measured and the shrink is derived which generate the Shrink percentage. This shrink determines the quality of the material and helps in decision making for the selection of the fabric or linen.

Durability- Along with the shrinkage the wash cycle of the linen helps in finding out the durability of the fabric or the linen. After the wash cycle the sample is tested for its strength by pulling it from its two ends to determine its durability. After pulling the sample is looked in through by putting it across the light. The weave is checked and also is checked that the thread in the weave had not left space forming loops in fabric or gaps in the weave of the thread. The durability of the fabric determines the selection of the linen.
